Rolands is a Senior Consultant at CEP. In almost a decade of professional involvement in the area of environmental protection and climate change he has contributed to a number of international projects on climate change adaptation, policy development and ecosystem resilience. Rolands obtained an MSc in Ecosystems, Governance and Globalisation from Stockholm University. His research looked at the options of how to build resilience in social-ecological systems to climate-driven changes.

Prior to joining CEP he worked as Research Assistant for E3G - a non-profit organisation focused on accelerating the global transition to sustainable development - where he helped to develop a narrative to build support and raise ambition for the 2030 climate and energy framework. Rolands also undertook an internship in the European Commission's DG Regional Policy and has previously worked for both the Stockholm Resilience Centre, looking at different types of regime shifts that have large impacts on ecosystem services, and for the Latvian Environmental Protection Fund Administration.

Rolands has highly developed research skills with particular experience in the analysis of qualitative and quantitative information and information collection (through interviews and surveys). He also has experience of undertaking programme and project evaluations and he has experience in stakeholder engagement including stakeholder mapping, interviews and the organisation and hosting of seminars and workshops. Most recently at CEP Rolands has been working on European Commission DG Environment and the European Environment Agency (EEA) projects including in the areas of emerging risk identification for the environment, global megatrend implications at regional and national levels, tipping points in ecosystems and planetary boundaries, and the monitoring needs for the EU 7th Environmental Action Programme. Rolands is increasingly establishing a role in major contract coordination, such as for the EEA framework service contract on forward-looking analysis, sustainability assessments and systemic transitions.
